Finding Pairs
Format: Mat

Method and Message:The game of "Pelmenism" applied to a number of messages in picture form. Children consider the correlation between say a seatbelt and a road accident.

Usage:
For young children the cards may be placed face up. The "pairs of pairs" will form the basis of discussion. Competitiveness can vary considerably

It matters how you travel
Format: Mat

Method and message:
A simple approach to a complicated message about health and sustainability. Children follow a line and draw conclusions.

Usage:
Quite a physical activity. Young children may want to walk round the mat with their line.

Playing and crossing - safe or not?
Format: Mat

Method and message:
A “jigsaw” with a reveal on the back of each hexagon. Children then decide for themselves about safety / appropriate places to play or cross. Cars and people can be placed to reinforce the message.

Usage:
Facilitators may judge that some young children should not use the small plastic figures.

How fast can you react?
Format: Mat

Method and message:
An experiment about reaction times.

Usage:
Could be done as a competition. Distractions or a blindfold could be added if children find it too easy.

Method and message:
Practical answers for problems. A bit of devil’s advocacy.

Usage:
Like most activities this can be done singly or as a group. It should provide an excellent basis for discussion.

Accidents do happen
Format: Mat

Method and message:
This is a comprehension exercise. Close reading of a short text and making up a newspaper.

Usage:
Younger children will need a good deal of help with this exercise.

Before, Kerrrunch, After
Format: Mat

Method and message:
Sorting out a story, putting yourself in the shoes of the participants.

Usage:
Younger children as a group should get a lot of discussion out of this with a facilitator.

Tabards
Format: 9 tabards in a bag - can be used with “Before, Kerrrunch, After” mat

Method and message:
Role play encourages children to think about the causes, the experience and the consequences of a traffic accident

Usage:
A whole class might participate if the 3 “acts” of the play are done by different children.

Format: Mat

Method and message:
A variety of messages to be displayed as posters.

Usage:
Probably not more than 2 children at a time.
