Road Safety

SAFER, FITTER, GREENER deals with Road Safety issues including Health and Environmental issues. The kit is based on a tried and tested format that has been used in schools, football clubs and even shopping malls.

Developed in conjunction with the Yorkshire and Humberside Local Authority Road Safety Officers Association, SAFER, FITTER, GREENER is suitable for Key Stages One and Two but may also be used with older children and families.

How to use the Kit

Parts are listed and correlated. Setting up and packing instructions are provided inside each box.

No special preparation is necessary for using the resource and an ideal approach is to explore the activities with the children. The kit is designed to raise issues for discussion. Some activities deliver a straightforward message while others - role playing activities for instance - are far more open to interpretation.

The SAFER, FITTER, GREENER activities come in 4 formats;- Mat, Box Top, Box Sides and Tower

Younger and less literate children will need direction from Road Safety Officers, Classroom Assistants or Teachers. Older pupils may use the activities with only minimal supervision. This independent exploring is an ideal form of hands-on learning. Because they are interactive everyone uses these resources differently and we always value your feedback.

Safer Fitter Greener "Hero Board"

A HERO BOARD forms the basis of a school travel plan as well as encouraging and monitoring a school's progress in reducing car journeys to school. The HERO BOARD also promotes delivery of a range of initiatives - pedestrian and cycle training, car-sharing databases etc. Hero Boards will also be a source of robust data over the course of a school year.

Hero Boards have been designed in response to Local Authority desire to implement School Travel Plans that achieve change and continuously involve pupils, staff and parents. Hero Boards are currently being trialled in both primary and secondary schools in West Yorkshire. Data from Hero Boards may be consolidated on a dedicated website which will also promote best practice, link schools and facilitate delivery of initiatives.
